CAMERA CLASS

Introduction to Digital Photography and Your Digital Camera

This 2-1/2 hour class meets at the Davis Art Center the third Thursday of each month, from 6 to 9pm. Contact the Davis Art Center for more information, 530-756-4100. Or, call Jeff's to arrange classes by appointment.

This class will help you understand the “how's and why's” of your digital camera. Every effort will be made to give students individual attention. During the three hour session we will explore your camera's menus; understand resolution settings; find out how to save, send and use image files. Class limit is 8 students. Class requirements: Digital camera (3 megapixel or more) with manual, memory card and charged battery. Optional: laptop, extra memory cards and batteries.

IMAGING CLASS

Introduction to Digital Imaging and Photoshop Elements v2

The “digital darkroom” for digital camera and film-based camera users.

This is a single-session class (3 hours) designed to give an overview of the use of digital imaging software and archival digital printing techniques. Introduction to Digital Photography is recommended.

Topics covered:

  • Use of digital card-readers; film and flatbed scanners
  • Scanning techniques
  • The “tools” of Photoshop Elements 2.0
  • Image enhancement: image size, contrast, color correction, understanding “levels,” sharpening, etc.
  • Software “plug-ins” designed to make image manipulation easier
  • Use of graphics tablets
  • Printers and printing to archival materials (both paper and ink)

In our professional digital darkroom we use an Epson 7600 (click here for more information) for color images. Black and white images are rendered on an Epson 1200 using quadtone black pigmented inks (click here for more information) . Other options for students will be explored.

ABOUT JEFF CHILDRESS

Jeff began taking photographs as a teenager, developing his film and printing in his father's darkroom. After attending UC Davis he served as an events photographer for the Davis Enterprise. Later, he opened his first camera store in Davis, learning about every new camera, accessory and piece of darkroom equipment as it came out from the manufacturer. In addition to helping his customers find just the right camera, he provided them with the best custom photo printing and enlargement services in the area, doing much of the darkroom work himself. Today, with a lifetime devoted to the art of photography and darkroom technique, Jeff offers his experience and service to you with a special focus on digital technology - photography's exciting future. Currently, Jeff offers professional digital photo imaging and restoration services in Winters at Jeff's STUDIO 9.
